People have a distorted view of what it takes to become wealthy. Most of these views are an attempt to explain away why they aren't wealthy, a combination of 'Only those..... can do it' and 'it could happen to anyone, I'm waiting for my pot of gold to arrive.'
The 10 most popular excuses and myths I have come across for not being wealthy are -
1 You need to be clever. Seriously you know this isn't true, look at how many people are wealthy but not intelligent. I guess it depends on how you define clever but certainly academic success is no measure of wealth. In fact it can hold people back, let them sink into a comfortable job and not stretch themselves.
2. You need to be born into wealth. Sure this MIGHT help but the majority of second generation wealthy people never do as well as the parent who created the wealth. They often just don't have the hunger. Look at how many people from the poorest of backgrounds go onto become very wealthy. Andrew Carnegie was born in a 2 room house and went onto become the richest man in the world.
3. You need to be lucky....... go ahead use this excuse if it makes you feel better but as Gary Player said, the more I practice the luckier I get! We only see the lucky breaks, not the years of dedication put in before the lucky break.
4. You have to be in the right place at the right time. Hmmmm, how about you create the right time? When would be a good time to start a company selling doughnuts? A purely non essential item? How about during the biggest recession the world has ever seen? Thats what Krispy Kreme did in the 1930's and went on to have 1000's of branches around the world.
5. You have to be young. Really? Tell that to Colonel Sanders who started Kentucky Fried Chicken at the age of 65 with $100 from his first social security cheque.
6. Ok you have to be old! - Just google 'young millionaires' to see this isn't true. Try Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook and worth $1.5 Billion at 24.
7. You have to come from a supportive family. Without a doubt this really does help but truth is you can do it without that support. Many people have used the lack of support as a motivator, you only have to look at any biography section to see how people have risen from abusive backgrounds to success.
8. You have to be nasty. Now if you are thinking this you will never be rich. Ever! Why not? Your unconscious mind is much more powerful than your conscious mind. If you unconsciously believe that rich people are bad why would you want to become like them? You will self sabotage to prevent yourself becoming one of the bad guys. Ok that's a simplistic view but it would take a long time to go through it in detail. Just trust me on this, you dont see any long term wealthy people who dislike wealthy people as a group.
9. You have to be White, Male and Middle class. hmmmm kinda rules out Oprah then? One of the richest people in America!
10. You have to work hard and not have any quality of life. Well you aren't going to get rich sitting watching TV every night that's true but it's a myth that you have to work hard to be rich. You have to work smart, not hard. If hard work was the deciding factor in wealth all the coal miners, labourers etc would be rich. You have to leverage yourself, any job that pays you by the time you put in will be limited, you cannot get rich selling your time - there simply isn't enough. Sure you can be comfortable and have a good standard of living but never truly wealthy. There are business oppportunities now that allow anyone to leverage their time and earn more than they used to. Part time opportunities that can make a real difference in your life. If you want any details of the sort of thing I am talking about feel free to contact me at steve@ukwealthcoach.com
So stop making excuses - anyone, truly anyone can be wealthy. You have to decided you want to be first.
